Definitions
- Flash PMI
- A preliminary purchasing-managers’ index release published before the final PMI. It is an early survey signal, not a complete measure of economic activity. Primary reference
- CPI
- The consumer price index tracks changes over time in the prices paid for a basket of goods and services. The basket, method and release calendar matter. Primary reference
- Margin
- Collateral or funds required under a product’s rules to support a position. Margin is not a guarantee against loss and requirements can change. Primary reference
- Leverage
- Exposure that is larger than the trader’s own capital. The nominal multiple in an illustration is not a promise that a broker or product will permit that multiple. Primary reference
- Market order
- An instruction seeking the best available price when it reaches the market. Execution is prioritised over a guaranteed price, especially in a fast or thin market. Primary reference
- Limit order
- An order with a maximum buy price or minimum sell price. It can control price boundaries but may not execute. Primary reference
- Stop-loss
- A trigger-based order instruction intended to manage an exit when a condition is reached. A gap, halt, illiquidity or rejection can cause a worse fill or no fill; it is not insurance. Primary reference
Use the definitions carefully
Product rules, broker controls, exchange notices and regulations change. Read the current contract and risk disclosure before using a term to describe a real order. The glossary is educational and is not a recommendation, quote or suitability assessment.
